Zola vs The Knot: which one should you plan with?

Zola and The Knot look alike from the outside: both are free, both give you a wedding website, a guest list, RSVPs and a registry, and both pair it with a vendor directory. Underneath, they are built for different jobs. Zola is a planning hub that happens to sell registry gifts and stationery. The Knot is the largest US vendor marketplace, with planning tools attached.

Which is cheaper, Zola or The Knot?

Both are free for the core tools, so the real question is where each one charges you later. The Knot keeps its planning tools free and makes money from vendors; Zola has a few paid add-ons.

With Zola, the seating chart is free for up to 15 guests, then $14.99 to unlock the premium version in the iOS app. Texting your whole guest list is a paid upgrade listed at $59.99 to $79.99, and website animations cost $1.99 to $9.99. The Knot has no paid planning features to unlock, partly because it simply has fewer planning features. On printed stationery, The Knot charges $0.35 per card for printed card backs since July 2025.

Cash funds are close to a tie. Both charge 2.5% on card gifts and both have a fee-free Venmo route. Zola shows the fee to guests as a “Handling Fee” by default but lets you cover it instead. The Knot’s help center says the guest must pay it on card contributions, with no option for couples to absorb it.

Which is better for actually planning the wedding?

Zola, by a clear margin. It still tracks money, it has a seating chart, and your partner can log in.

The Knot replaced its old Budgeter with Budget Advisor, which estimates local wedding costs but does not track what you have paid; saved budgets stayed viewable only until July 31, 2025. That matters, because Zola’s own survey found 69% of couples exceed their initial budget. Zola’s budget suggests allocations from your total, sends payment reminders and lets you upload contracts. Couples on Reddit single it out for showing upcoming versus paid payments.

On seating, The Knot has no digital tool at all. Zola’s has drag-and-drop tables, custom shapes and PDF or Excel export, but couples report discovering the $14.99 unlock only after they had built their guest list there, and it lives in the iOS app. If seating is a big job for you, see our best seating chart apps.

Collaboration is the other gap. Zola lets you invite one partner. The Knot’s help center says you cannot add a partner’s email, so one of you ends up running the account. With 84% of women in opposite-sex couples carrying most of the planning load, a shared login is a real handicap.

Which has the better guest list and RSVPs?

Both are solid and fairly close; Zola has a slight edge on tools, The Knot on platform coverage.

Both handle households, per-event RSVPs and meal choices, which is useful if you are among the 37% of couples hosting at least one extra event. Zola adds a Contact Collector link for addresses, free envelope addressing and CSV or Excel export. We could not verify a guest-list export in The Knot’s help center. On the other side, several 2026 App Store reviews say The Knot reduced or removed custom text and email messages to guests, and some report guest lists not loading in the app close to the wedding date.

Which is better for privacy and vendor spam?

Neither is quiet. Both run vendor marketplaces, both share data with advertising partners, and couples report marketing email from both.

The Knot’s whole business runs on vendor leads. When you message a vendor, its privacy policy says your details and message go to that vendor so it can contact you, and the policy covers the whole Knot Worldwide group, including WeddingWire. Vendors have also complained about fake leads, and a US senator asked the FTC to investigate in 2025. Zola’s vendors pay for leads too, and its privacy policy says it shares personal information with advertising partners and occasionally gives its postal mailing list to other companies. The most repeated tip on Reddit, for either one, is to sign up with a separate wedding email.
